Week 7

Hello friends and family

We had a good week. We have been meeting quite a few people and we have been searching for more people to teach. The trek continues!

We also had a mission tour this week. President Cook of the presidency of the Seventy visited the mission. He was super loving and nice! I learned a lot about Gods love and things that I can improve on as a missionary. My favorite line from our mission tour was "God loves underdogs and long shots!"
That is a line I will always remember...

I was also sick this week. Something has been going around. I'm already better today than I was a few days ago, so that is good. We had just enough meds to get us by while we battled it. It was mostly just a col I think.

It's been warming up here already. We have already stopped wearing our jackets as much.

Something I feel like I want to emphasize this week is the importance of maintaining a testimony. A testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel will carry us through dark times. We can strengthen our testimony, and in turn our own conversion to him, by keeping our covenants with God and keeping His commandments. Do you pray every day? Do you read your scriptures every day? All of these little things will bring us peace and joy. I have been able to see a difference when I am obedient to God and when I am not. The Lord loves us and desires our joy. This is something I learned as I became more obedient to His commandments. And my life has been blessed because of it!

This is a shorter email this week, but I am alive and well. Hope you all have a great week!

The Book of Mormon

Hello friends and family!

This past week was good. We walked around and talked to many people! We didn't have too many people make it to church this week which was a bummer, but that's okay. We will get some more this Sunday...

We had a few solid lessons this passed week. In every single one I found myself testifying of the Book of Mormon and inviting people to read from it. We committed one man who has been investigating the church for about 2 years now, and we are trying to figure out why he hasn't gotten Baptized yet. Well we learned he hasn't been keeping any of the old commitments he was extended, so we are helping him to read the Book of Mormon. When we committed him, I got a spiritual reassurance that what we had just taught him was true, but also that this is what he needed right now.

I had a similar experience in a few other lessons this week as well. I have made sure to read from the Book of Mormon every day myself. I know that the Prophets have asked us to do so for a long time now, and I feel a calm reassurance of its truth and divinity every time I read its words. It really has changed my life. Every time I need a pick me up, I crack open the Book of Mormon. The doctrines within give me a whole new perspective on life and my own relationship with the Savior. His love and Spirit radiate from the Book of Mormon. It has been an enormous blessing in my life. If you have not read it in awhile I would strongly encourage and invite you to read from the Book of Mormon again. It will lift and encourage you and take you to another level of peace and joy. It will help to give you guidance in a world of ever-changing values. It will help lead you safely back to our Heavenly Father. He has given us this book to inspire us to new heights and new plains of joy, so let us continually show our gratitude by feasting on His words.

This week has been slower, but every step I take in the service of God is a blessing. I am ever grateful for the opportunity I have to serve. I love you all and thank you for all that you do. Have a great week!

BONUS! Excerpts from Elder Moore's email to his mom!

Hi Mom!

Sorry I haven't been sending any pictures... we haven't taken any. Thanks for the package you sent! There were a lot of cookies! I shared some with our neighbors. They are missionaries in our district, and they appreciated them as well. Henderson is good. It's much slower here than Las Vegas, but the people we teach are generally more committed. Plus you don't have to worry about them going to jail or getting evicted as a regular thing, which is nice. How is the family doing? I feel like I should apologize for not emailing you specifically. I read all of your emails (dad's too). I'm not the best at replying. P-day sometimes get busy....
But that's no excuse.

I also forgot to mention that a member of the 70 is coming to tour the mission on Friday. I'll tell you all more about it later! Thanks for all the love and support. You and Dad are the best parents. I love you!

Hello Friends and Family

It rained yesterday. We don't get rain too often, so it was good to have. I enjoyed it. Nobody took pity on us and let us in, but maybe they just didn't hear the doorbell or the knocking because of the rain...

We had a few interesting things happen this week. We talked to this lady about the Bible on her doorstep, and then we taught her about the Book of Mormon. When we gave her a copy she said "Wow! My first Book of Mormon!". It was a neat experience to have because a few weeks prior she wasn't happy to see us on her doorstep, but we stopped by again and the Lord had softened her heart.
We took one of the people we are teaching on a chapel tour. We showed them around the main chapel and then the baptismal font. We taught her and her daughter about Baptism and we managed to resolve some concerns about when she is actually going to he baptized.
I decided to talk about some actual details of what I've actually been doing this week, because I actually realized that I haven't actually talked about the work that we are actually doing.
So, anyways there are quite a few part-member families that we have been stopping by and meeting, and that has been fun. We even found a self proclaimed "Jack-mormon/Jack member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints". He was a lot of fun to talk to, plus he smelled like alcohol. He offered to feed us one of these days using his giant smoker. So, maybe I'll have a story to tell on a later week.
We were walking across a crosswalk the other day (the kind where you push a button and then lights start flashing that signal to everyone for them to stop their car so you can walk) and there was one lady who was zooming up on us and we thought she was getting pretty close, but then she slowed down really fast and then made her turn after we walked across. She pulled up next to us and told us that Angel's were definitely watching out for us because she didn't see us but then she heard a car honk at her so she would see us. We heard the car honk but whoever did it had no reason to honk, so it was seemingly random. Interesting eh?
Since we are in Henderson, there are a few places around here that let us get free stuff, since we are missionaries. Great Harvest Bread Co. Has missionary meals where people can pay for a missionaries meal and then we walk in and use the meals to get a free sandwich. Which is nice. Plus there is a place called Fiz that sells flavored soda combo drinks that let us get free drinks. There was a subway in my last area that was owned by a member, and he let us get chips and drinks for free, and even sometimes sandwiches. I'm saying all this not to brag, but more for my mother who might be worried since I just mentioned that I almost got hit by a car. Just so she knows I am getting taken care of...
Anywho, life is good, I'm busy and it is still raining. This transfer has flown by. I am already over halfway done with it. And this is a longer one because of Christmas.

The Church is True. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is even more true. The Book of Mormon is also true, and is the word of God. This is something that I have learned for myself and have been able to see bless my own life, and the lives of others.

Teddy Bear

Hello Friends and Family!

This past week was good. We have done a lot of things. We had interviews with the mission president yesterday. They were good, but mine was short. I usually have short interviews....
But President told my companion that I am the "Teddy Bear" of the mission because I apparently get along with everyone, including companions and leadership. So that was good to hear. Maybe I need to be more gruff and then I can be the "grizzly bear" of the mission too....

There are a few people in this area that have been taking missionary lessons for a long time. There is a man here who has been looking into the church for 2 years now and that is... a while. Usually people get baptized or drop us before 2 years go by. But we are teaching him. There is another nonmember who is the only non-member in her family. She is the most "dry" member ever because she has a calling in the primary as the secretary but hasn't been baptized. It's almost a bit silly that she hasn't, but we continue to work in that area as well...

Since I am back in Henderson, and I am also in the richest zone of the mission, there are a ton if places to eat food. So much stuff around here to do on p-day as well. It's almost ridiculous how safe it is here compared to Las Vegas. We had a member ask us if it was safe to walk around at night. We both answered affirmatively since Elder McKee just came from the most dangerous area and I came from the area with the most dangerous apartments in the mission.

I don't remember if I mentioned this, but our area is pretty small. I can walk from one end to the other in about an hour. I also don't remember if I mentioned this, but this area is right next to my first area I served in. But it is probably even more... rich. Plenty of sports cars and teslas in this neighborhood.

Also the ward members are super nice and everybody knows all of their neighbors. There is a gated community in the area that half of one of the ward lives in. All the members here love the missionaries like crazy. It's basically culture shock going from homeless people and druggies to bright happy safe henderson. (I have learned to love both though)

This morning I was thinking about repentance, and the Lords desire to bless us. Sometimes people beat themselves up and think that they are somehow unworthy of Gods love, but that is something that I have learned that never really goes away. Perhaps we are stubborn and refuse to change or move, but the Lord is always available to help us and lift us up. Satan is clever and tries to make it seem like we can't go back or that God doesn't love us. That is simply a lie. The Lord is always there to change and fix us of our faults and lift us to the next level. Because "men are that they might have joy" (2 Nephi 2:25). This is something that I have learned on my mission. God's love trumps all fear and sorrow. I know that The Savior Lives and that He died for us, and that because of Him, we can return to live with our Loving Father someday.

I hope you all have a great week!

2019

There is a thing called a "blackout year" or a "celestial year" (based on who you ask). 2018 was that year for me. I have officially been set apart and working as a missionary all of 2018. Cool huh?

How have y'all been? I don't have as much to talk about again this week. Not as much stuff happens in Henderson. We just talk to people and visit referrals all day, so basically we do missionary work and don't have anything to complain about. My companion is the district leader, so I get to listen on follow-up calls with our whole district and with the zone leaders. My companion also goes home in about 5 months. The weeks are flying by. Yesterday we went to target and purchased mountain dew to celebrate new years eve. I reflected on my past years worth of missionary work and I can say that it was probably one of the best years of my life. It flew by really fast, and I got to see people change their lives around. I got to witness people making covenants with our Heavenly Father. I got to read the Book of Mormon a couple of times this past year. I got to train a new missionary for 5 weeks. I got to experience the Las Vegas ghetto. I got to go to the temple a few times. What a year it has been...

Like I said... I don't have a lot to say this time around. We are just... working. It's great!

The Lord has blessed us with a good year, and if we hold out faithful, we will have another great one.
